BioCODES – Antimicrobial in silico tools

Currently, healthcare-associated infections represent a major public health problem due to the emergence of antimicrobial resistance, which increases hospital stays and worsens patient prognosis, ultimately resulting in high healthcare costs. For this reason, it is necessary to develop new tools to prevent and monitor infections caused by critical microorganisms.
Through computational tools such as QSAR models, compounds active against resistant pathogens will be identified and selected. This information will serve as a starting point for optimizing new formulations of disinfectant products with fungicidal and bactericidal activity for use in the disinfection of spaces and surfaces in hospital environments. In parallel, efforts will be made to develop biosensors capable of monitoring the presence of these pathogens and enabling early warning alerts in cases where they are detected in hospital environments.
During this period, we have successfully developed seven finalized QSAR models capable of predicting the antimicrobial activity of chemical compounds against Aspergillus fumigatus, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In the near future, we will expand this predictive panel through the development of new antimicrobial and biocidal models.
