Title: Metabolomics-based biomarkers for the development of diagnostic devices for cardiotoxicity associated with immunotherapy treatments and liver disease. (Código: INNTA3/2024/3)

Cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and targeted therapies, can have a negative impact on heart health, leading to cardiotoxicity. This means that although these drugs are essential for combating cancer, they can also damage cardiac tissue and cause serious side effects, such as heart failure or arrhythmias. Therefore, the early detection of cardiotoxicity is crucial to adjust treatments and preserve the cardiac health of oncology patients.

To address this problem, the project aims to develop a decision-support tool to predict cardiotoxicity in the clinical setting. To this end, the cardiotoxic effects of oncological treatments will be characterized using imaging techniques, and metabolic biomarkers will be identified from patient samples. By integrating these data, effective prognostic and diagnostic models will be created to develop the cardiotoxicity prediction tool.

In the initial project activities, a literature review of cardiotoxicity biomarkers associated with breast cancer treatments and hepatocellular carcinoma was carried out. In addition, the study was designed by selecting patient inclusion and exclusion criteria and the imaging parameters to be considered for classifying patients based on cardiotoxicity. Finally, plasma samples were obtained, which will be used in subsequent activities to perform metabolomic analysis and identify the biomarkers.
